Before any VA lender can process your loan, they need proof of your eligibility. That proof is the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) — and in most cases your lender can pull it electronically in minutes. It is the first step in our step-by-step VA loan process. Start with MaxVALoan and we will handle your COE as part of your pre-approval.
What It Means
The COE is an official VA document that confirms you meet the service requirements for the VA home loan benefit. It lists your entitlement amount and any existing VA loan obligations. It is not a loan approval — it is proof you are eligible to apply. Every VA purchase loan and refinance requires one. See what documents you need to obtain your COE.
Requirements
Three ways to get your COE:
- Through your lender (fastest — recommended): VA-approved lenders have direct access to the Automated Certificate of Eligibility (ACE) system. Your lender inputs your Social Security number and service information and often receives the COE in real-time. Most MaxVALoan clients get their COE within the first 15 minutes of starting pre-approval.
- Online via VA.gov or eBenefits: Log in at va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/request-coe-form-26-1880. Takes 5–30 minutes if your records are in the system.
- By mail — VA Form 26-1880: Slowest option (2–4 weeks). Use only if electronic methods fail.
Surviving spouses: Use VA Form 26-1817 instead of 26-1880. See our surviving spouse guide.
Examples
Instant pull: A veteran calls MaxVALoan on a Tuesday afternoon. We pull his COE electronically in 4 minutes. He has a full pre-approval letter by end of day and makes an offer on a home Friday.
Manual case: A Vietnam-era veteran's records are not digitized. His lender submits Form 26-1880 with his DD-214. The VA processes it in 12 business days. His lender manages the timeline around the delay.
Tips
- Always start with a lender who has ACE access — it is the fastest and most reliable method in 95%+ of cases
- Have your Social Security number, date of birth, and service dates ready even for electronic pulls
- Review your COE once received — check the entitlement amount and whether any prior VA loans are listed. See our entitlement guide
- Your COE does not expire — but your entitlement amount may change if you have used VA loans since it was last issued
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I apply for a VA loan without a COE in hand?
A: Yes — lenders can often begin processing while pulling the COE simultaneously. Do not let a missing COE delay your pre-approval start.
Q: My COE shows "prior loan not paid in full" — what does that mean?
A: It means entitlement is tied to an active VA loan. You may still have remaining entitlement. Contact us for a full entitlement review.
Q: I served in both the Reserves and active duty — which service is on my COE?
A: The COE reflects all qualifying service. Your lender may need documentation from both service periods. Bring all relevant discharge and separation documents.
